• Out of logons?

    Hello All,

    I have just setup a new Synchronet BBS and make an initial setup.

    I logged on for the first time and was going through the new user questions/setup. Shortly after logging in I saw message something like times up and I was logged off. I never got to the create guest account setup question.

    Now when I login and enter my name and it says "Times up.", and logs me out. It doesn't ask for my password. I see this on the sbbs terminal server screen..

    I'm not sure why that is but that is what I discovered so far.

    This is a new install from git of SBBS 3.20.

    I used "jsexec makeguest" to create a guest account. I can log in as guest and browse around the BBS but the sysop and regular user accounts are not usable.

    I'm not sure why that is but that is what I discovered so far.


    something is screwed up. so just go into scfg in your security levels and change the time per day

    Is this user #1? The first user created is normally given sysop access (e.g. security level 99, all flags, etc). How did you create this user account?

    just do what i said and it'll be fine.

    The time per day is set to default, 240 minites if I remember right.

    The security levels drop to 0 and the password field blanks after attempting to login for some reason I don't know.

    to test it.

    That is what I have done. After logging in I am logged off and looking at my (or another) account in uedit the security level, password and time fields are blank.

    I can update those fields in uedit and then log in again briefly before being logged out because "Time's up."

    I can't seem to get passed this.

    If the user's security level was already 0 at this time, that would be expected.

    If you use a user editor to set the user's level correctly (e.g. 99 for the sysop), and then login, do you see anything different in the terminal server log output? Which user editor are you using to set the security level?

    I'm committed to helping you find the solution too as it's very likely a bug introduced in v3.20, but only manifesting on your system/configuration for some reason.

    The data/user/user.tab file is plain text and if you compare before/after logging in or editing with a user editor, that may be very helpful in root-causing the issue.

    the channel synchronet.

    you can use a web client. make sure you wait there.
    it's like an answering machine, not instant gratification.

    Possibly, but I couldn't guess/say *why* it makes a difference yet.

    I removed write permissions to the user.tab file and I am able to log on now.

    That's not a solution of course, SBBS needs to write that file for a number of reasons. I'm going to log off and put those write permissions back but it seems that there is something wrong in what SBBS is writting to that file.

    Yes, if I set the security level to 99 and set the password I can log in briefly but am logged off after a few seconds. I just see "Time's up." and then I am disconnected.

    I am using "exec/uedit" from the /sbbs directory.

    The issue seems to be that the user.tab file is missing the security level, minutes, and password info. Possibly others, I am not sure.

    If you use a user editor to set the user's level correctly (e.g. 99 for the sysop), and then login, do you see anything different in the terminal server log output? Which user editor are you using to set the security level?

    Yes, if I set the security level to 99 and set the password I can log in briefly but am logged off after a few seconds. I just see "Time's up." and then I am disconnected.

    did you say that in the beginning and i didnt catch that?

    you should reset all your permissions and take ownership.

    There might be something unique to your ctrl/main.ini file that's triggering this issue.

    Maybe try deleting your data/user/* files and logging on as new again and immediately save a copy of the created user.tab file (as soon as its created during the new user process) and share that with me.

    I do have ownership. I just removed write permissions, even for myself but I have reset that now.

    I am not sure why but after deleting data/user/* and creating a new account things are working normally. Maybe I didn't have enough of the initial setup done when I first logged in.

    No apology necessary, the system was doing something unexpected (by both you and I), so I appreciate being made aware of it. Unfortunately, we didn't really get to the bottom of it.

    I had a very light initial setup done, my name and BBS name but not much else. I didn't have my message options or BBSID set at the time when I first logged in.

    I have changed some of my default login options and am now getting the "Times up." message again.

    1. I changed my editor to Syledit.

    2. I disabled the spinning pause prompt.

    3. I changed the default mail scan to search for new personal messages instead of a new mail scan.

    4. I changed the default transfer protocol. I hit "q" at that prompt so there is no default protocol. I do that so I can choose zmodem when I am remote and local copy when I am local.

    I think one of those changes may have caused the issue.

    Those are the user accounts to which I was inquiring. Anyway, I experimented with running 'jsexec update' (which runs upgrade_to_v320 when there's no user.tab file) and did not reproduce your issue as a result, so that doesn't appear to be a factor here.

    What I was asking was were you using a user editor (e.g. ;uedit sysop command) or the just the user menu option or maybe a sysop user editor utilty (e.g. exec/uedit) to change those settings. But no matter, I discovered that I could reproduce it with the default user config menu option, so fix forthcoming.
