Fishing is one, but it is not one of mine.

I would call BBSing a hobby. I am also interested in Model Railroading,
but it has been a while since I felt like I had the money, time, or
patience to do much with it (for me it seems to take all three at once).

I can understand model railroading, but don't have the space, time or money, and doubtful I have the patience either. I do appreciate a good layout though.

However, I have gained an interest in drone flying and aerial photography. Got a cheap Chinese drone to play with. Fun to fly, but has a number of issues. The camera quality isn't too bad though, but without any stabilisation, the best way to use it is to get it in position, then start shooting video. Vertical motion could be done without disturbing the camera too much, but horizontal motion would cause jerkiness when the drone starts or stops moving.

i got a drone from amazon. it had stabilization problems, i think. i followed the instructions on how to calibrate it and it wouldnt raise straight up and hold the same position. anyways, i tossed it out. wasnt really something i wanted.

Interesting to hear what peoples' hobbies are here..

I have multiple things I enjoy doing in my free time, but lately it seems I don't have a whole lot of time for hobbies. Sometimes here and there when I can.

One thing I enjoy doing is working on some of my own software projects every so often. Often that includes my BBS tools (SlyEdit, message reader, etc.), but I've had other software projects I've worked on from time to time. A few years ago, I started working on an Android app to help track fuel economy.. The idea would be that when you go fill up the gas tank for your car, you'd enter the fill amount and distance you drove, and it would keep track of fuel economy over time (and could also track things like price paid per a gallon of gas, cost of gas for a mile driven, etc.). I saw that there were a lot of similar apps available, so I wasn't too motivated to finish it, but I got the underlying Java support code done.. The last part would be finishing the Android UI.

I also like playing guitar and keyboards sometimes. That's something I haven't done a whole lot lately, but I still enjoy it. I also sometimes enjoy retro video game emulation and the ways that can be done, and tinkering with electronics (I like to build my own desktop PC when I upgrade to a new PC, etc.). Occasionally I've enjoyed building plastic model kits and flying my R/C helicopter, but I haven't done either of those for a long time.

In Australia, it's 3 nautical miles from an active airport that you can't fly. And you can't fly over 400 feet, or out of line of sight without special qualifications. I won't go into details, but CASA have made the regulations readily available. They also put out an app, so you can see if it's legal to fly where you're intending to fly. The app also has the regulations included.

I don't think spying on neighbors would be a commonly expected use case for a drone. That probably falls into being a peeping tom, which is a separate category and could be done in other ways besides using a drone.. There are plenty of people who would want to use a drone for aerial photography, which (as far as I know) is not illegal in and of itself.

I think tha peeping Tom use would breach privacy, possibly stalking laws here. Another big gotcha in these parts is it's illegal to operate from land managed by Parks Victoria, which precludes operation from state and national forests, as well as many regional parks, historical sites and recreation areas. However, city owned facilities have no such restrictions, so it pays to check carefully whose land youre operating from. Getting it wrong could cost thousands (I think the fine for flying a drone from PV managed land is around $3k).

Unfortunately, this data is not easy to obtain in the field. I found their website not very mobile friendly, so the best way is to check your proposed operating sites on a PC/Mac, before heading out to fly. On a PC, you do get a good map of Parks Victoria managed land.

That's why I think it will get more difficult to operate drone's legally in the future. I feel they make it too easy to "spy" on people. If I had a drone I could just fly over my neighbors back yard whenever I want right? If one was flying around in my backyard I take it down with my pellet gun. Shooting is one of my hobbies. If I did shoot down an enemy drone would I be liable to pay for it? Would I have the right to shoot it down?

case for a drone. That probably falls into being a peeping tom,
which is a separate category and could be done in other ways
    besides using a drone..

That's why I think it will get more difficult to operate drone's legally in the future. I feel they make it too easy to "spy" on people. If I had a drone I could just fly over my neighbors back yard whenever I want right?

Well if you're going to ban drones for that, then you could also ban binoculars, telescopes, using ladders outside, etc.. Seems like a fairly small thing to ban them for, and if people are going to do that, I think there's already laws against peeping on people and violating their privacy.

    That would be good!

I did take a bit of footage of one ship earlier this year, until the drone had a bit of a malfunction (apparently common what that particular model, but it was only a cheap one). This is a hobby to further in the future.

it's not illegal to videotape someone on their property if you are on YOUR property. i've done it with my shitty neighbors.

all that other stuff, you have to check into locally. you can NOT shoot down a drone. the best thing to do is talk to the person flying the drone or the police.

I half-way feel like there are laws like that so that you won't shoot down
a law enforcement (or big brother) drone that is spying on you.

Maybe not right now, but they could have that in place for the future of
    their drone use.

For me it was the opposite. I had many conquests and many long term relationships but I always wished I could re-do my 16-26 yrs of life and take advantage of the ones I skipped because i was in relationships :)

One hobby that never suffered was home computers and my love for the
TI-99/4(a) which was my first computer.

Over the past 2 yrs I've collected:
    1. a full TI with expansion box, 2 drives, modem, sketch board, and about 20 modules and an official TI cassette recorder.
    2. a Tandy TRS-80 Model 100 portable (which was my 2nd computer) with a 300bbs onboard and external modems. I wrote a BBS on it last winter in basic.
    3. A TRS-80 COCO 1 with a 300bbs modem and about 8 carts and a cassette recorder. It's awesome getting old programs in .wav and recording onto an old cassette tape and going through the old motions of waiting for sh*t to load.
    4. A TRS-80 COCO 2
    5. A Timex Sinclair 1000
    6. 5 old school tube tvs (2 flat screen digital) with coax to RF converters so i can hook up all these bad boys.

It was super fun for about 2 months. now they are all packed up in storage.

    the one that arrived DOA.

I played with it some after I got the expansion box, but have not fired it

There's risks with anything. For example, I've only used my GoPro knock off camera once in the last 8 months, but I'm planning on taking it out for some serious video shooting on Sunday. But it only cost $40, so I'm not too fussed.

Spent more on drones, but I want to explore how I can use that technology. First drone was a cheap "practice and learn to fly" drone that takes good video in some circumstances, like when stationary, adjusting height only or panoramas. It's not so good when shooting while changing speed or direction, because of the lack of stabilisation on the camera (no gimbal). But, still, it's good to practice with, and if I kill it, no biggie.

For a while my sons and i were r/c car'ing and dirtbiking every

My best buys are sports related. A good set of track spikes will get a LOT of use, guaranteed. They're more likely to be retired as "backups" and "training spikes" than actually wear out, even after a couple of seasons. But my needs are evolving. My newest pair, bought 2 months ago seem to be a huge step up, and I may consider another upgrade to a more aggressive pair in a year's time - One has to be careful, but I'm in such good condition, I can safely use the more aggressive models.

i got a drone for christmas and i used it maybe a few times before tossing it in the trash.

One hobby that never suffered was home computers and my love for the TI-99/4(a) which was my first computer.

Was an Atari 800 for me, I still have it, but the CPU/Vid card is having issues. I already got a replacement super cpu card which gives the system a new s-video output that's supposed to be "the best" color mod for the 8-bit Atari as well as a 65C815 cpu (it's like a faster 6502 with some extra instructions).

Also has an Incognito card which gives the system a ton of amazing features including a whoping 1mb of ram. I love that system. It's in storage...

It was super fun for about 2 months. now they are all packed up in storage.

Yeah, my STe, MegaST, are rotting in storage. Once we get moved I'm going to set them up in the garage (I hope).

Cool! :) I did it a bit in high school, typically, the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and triple jump. Didn't have the money or justification for spikes back then. My HS years were 1980 - 1986, and the last 4 years were my best ones. These were the years after football training brought my sprint capabilities
    ut.

    Open 100
    Open 200
    4x100 Relay
    4x200 Relay
    4x400 Relay
    Open 400

I now run (in age group 50-54 (Masters) or 50+ (AV):

    60m (Masters only)
    100m
    200m
    400m
    Occasional 800m
    100m hurdles
    400m hurdles
    4x100 relay
    4x400m relay
4x200, Swedish, medley relays when offered at meets.
    Long jump
    Triple jump
    High jump (occasionally)
Throws, just for fun (though now seriously working on my discus).

I also do the occasional outdoor pentathlon or decathlon. :)

Have won state Masters medals in the 100 and 200m (bronze) this year. Also won medals in the hurdles, but only because not too many are silly enough to attempt them. :D Got through my heats and made the final of the 60m and 200m at this years Australian Masters. No medals this time, but it was my first attempt at that level.

I still have the actual spikes i had (longs and shorts) but not the
shoes. Wish i kept the shoes. My last pair screamed 80's.

White Nike's with a bright pink swoop and yellow and purple highlights with pink and yellow soles.

Nike don't suit me, as my foot is too wide for them. My middle distance spikes are Asics, but for sprints, I prefer Saucony - stiffer plate, gives me more spring off the track, and I can really feel the difference at the top end of my speed range.

Its funny when i started running with the distance guys to sub in/out for thei r 4x400 team, they tried to get me to go sub 50s but i HATED the 400 and 52 was the best I could put out. However the football team worked out near the track and their coach got wind of my 100 and 200 times/splits and asked me if I wanted to play rb. I always liked football better than anything but wussed out and stayed with track despite pulling a 4.6 40 on my first try.

Yeah, tris are not my thing. :) And as for the mile, I ran a mile a month ago in 6:22, which I was pretty happy with. :)

Its funny when i started running with the distance guys to sub in/out

the 400 and 52 was the best I could put out. However the football team

400 for me is a very recent thing. I never could run it as a kid. Even 200 was pushing it. Now, I can run 400 in 61 seconds. Still a bit off the pace in my age group, but still useful for the 4x400m relay. My best range is 60-200 metres, though I'm not yet getting full acceleration. That needs just lots more work and practice starts, doing them like drills. :)

worked out near the track and their coach got wind of my 100 and 200 times/splits and asked me if I wanted to play rb. I always liked
football better than anything but wussed out and stayed with track

I presume you mean 40 yards (I've read about that speed test). Football references are not going to translate, because we play a totally different form of football here. :) No idea what I'd run 40 yards in. I ran 60 metres in 8.48 2 months ago at the nationals, have been known to get down to 8.32, and my hand timed 75 yard time should be around 9-9.5 seconds. Last pre-season, I scored around 9.6, but I was holding back, to save myself for a mafor meet 2 weeks later. :)

The 75 yard measure is one we use in our fire brigade competitions, because that sport dates back to the mid 1800s, when we used to use Imperial measurements. The track markings are still in the same places for the traditional events. That means we also have a natural 100 yard measure, which is from the first start line to the hydrants. But that's a sport that's going to take a lot of explaining (with vids!). It is, however, the reason I took up track 4 years ago. I needed more speed. :)
