Just checking to see if anyone does N Scale model railroading.

I haven't done anything with model railroads since I was maybe 10 or 11 years old, but I had some HO engines & cars and enjoyed setting them up and letting them run sometimes. I never got into setting up detailed train sets, but I always thought it was interesting to see other peoples' train sets.

HO here, but it has been a while since I have had time and money to work on
it. Maybe if I spent less time in front of the BBS and the TV... :)

I just got back into it in the last couple of months. I found my set from high school. Started building a layout recently, and a lot of stuff has changed in 30 years. Automation, really. So I've got a few arduinos and power shells. Just wanting to see what I can do.

It does take a lot of time. Kinda like the BBS. "When I get done, it'll run by itself." It is never finished. I always want to change something.

Arduino has revolutionized several hobbies. A former co-worker was big Lego c ollector, and had several Lego train sets, plus custom 3D printed track sections. If you never dealt with Lego trains, they are controlled via infrared remote control. I've read where the remote is replaced by an Ardiuin o is a central tower, and sends IR signals to the train. You could place motion sensors to trigger the train's behavior, such as stop at a station
after 3 laps, change tracks, or other ways to automate lights and
    accessories.

I have (had?) an HO scale setup that's been packed away for a decade or so now, because I simply didn't have room for it. I've been seriously considering downsizing to N-scale but the monitary investment is .. considerable.

I had a small n-scale layout (ha!) when I was a kid, and I loved it.

Cool. Like a tv remote. I saw where you can do bluetooth and your phone also.

Not here. I had train sets growing up, but after repeatedly burning
out several transformers (they were off, but still plugged in), my
parents one day said "No more train sets for you". :P

Now, I play Auran Trainz 2019 on the Lenovo Windows 10 64-bit laptop computer.

There were some Model Powers back in the day that were suspect. They're
better now. Of course you could spend loads of dollars and go the DCC route. I'm just doing it to build stuff, and mess with arduinos.

It's been close to 20 years ago I recall there was a Halflife Trains mod.
The Halflife mod community produced some real nice prefab objects, and I
recall the trains and train mod stuff looked good.

For HO, Model Power locos and box cars are/were more affordable but also
were often thought of as not being prototypical and of not having quality drives. At the time I am thinking of, Proto 2000 was still owned by
LifeLike, were affordable and, unlike MP, were more prototypical and had
    better drives.

The last time I looked at Proto-2000 (or even 1000) prices, now that they
are owned by another company, they are not so affordable.

I figure if I ever get back into it and need to keep cost down, I can pass
off some of the less-prototypical stuff off as "railroad specific" modifications or rebuilds. :D

For PC. Not sure if Steam ever hosted the mods. I recall seeing them active around the same time Couterstrike was still in beta. In the editor, there
was a module that was loaded with games /sim specific definitions, and then you'd use the map editor to create your layout and create the hidden overlays that describe what is considered the track route.

I used to build maps for Counterstrike, and the track, vehicle, and door and devce controls from Half Life were all kept in the mod. I liked the idea of making parts of maps unaccessable by adding controls that would lock door or flood areas that would porevent the use of anything but a pistol.
